Golden goals: David Narey (1982)

If you are going to score one goal at international level then you might as well make it special. Argentina's Jose Luis Brown scoring in the 1986 World Cup takes some beating, yet there could be honourable mentions for many others, such as Kieran Trippier (World Cup semi-final), Scotland's Gary Mackay helping Ireland reach Euro 88, and the general hilarity of Davide Gualtieri's sole strike for San Marino.

Another player who can be added to this list is Scotland's David Narey. The fact that Narey scored his only international goal at the 1982 World Cup finals is part of the reason it is so memorable. Add into the mix that Narey scored a screamer against Brazil and it is obvious why it the goal is still talked about. But it was also the response to Narey's moment of glory that made an impact.

Golden goals: Paolo Rossi (1982)

As the 1970s progressed, it seemed that the star of Italian forward Paolo Rossi would continue to shine brightly. Top scorer in Serie B for Vicenza in the 1976/77 season, Rossi became the first man to repeat the feat in Serie A the following season. And then came the 1978 World Cup.

Scoring three goals as Italy finished fourth, Rossi claimed the Silver Ball award for the second-best player in the tournament.

The Rous Cup and the demise of the England-Scotland match

Watching the recent World Cup qualifying match between Scotland and England, I turned to my son and started boring him, as usual, with tales of my sporting childhood. Recalling the era where the England-Scotland fixture was an annual event, and a match that was eagerly anticipated, I felt grateful that I had grown up during this period. With so little live football on our televisions, the England-Scotland match was not far behind the FA Cup final in terms of excitement.

1980s: Goalkeeping gaffs

Claudio Bravo made a much publicised error on his recent Man City debut, but I'm not sure if his cock up matched any of the following goalkeeping bloopers from the 1980s.

1982 World Cup: Brazil's Goals 15 to 1

Brazil 1982. The mere mention of that country and year combo brings back a host of memories for anyone lucky enough to have lived through the experience first time round. It pains me to say that they were just before my time, that I caught the football bug one year too late, and that my first exposure to football was of the slightly less vintage Arsenal 1983 team (trust me, it wasn't pretty).

So after passing on my affliction to my 7-year-old son, I decided to sit him down and show him every goal that Brazil scored at the 1982 World Cup. And then I decided to rank them 15 to 1. You may disagree with my final chart countdown, although I promise not to be too bothered. After all, I got to sit through numerous YouTube clips of this fabulous team. There are worse ways to spend your time.

1980 Mundialito

What better way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first ever World Cup in Uruguay than to arrange a tournament between the six previous winners, a champion of champions event played in the very same country where the World Cup had first kicked-off all those years ago? And so the Mundialito (Little World Cup) or Copa de Oro (Gold Cup) was conceived in 1979, the celebratory tournament to be played in December 1980 and January 1981, contested between Uruguay, Italy, West Germany, Brazil, England, and Argentina.
